Senator Perdue: “General, thank you for your extraordinary lifetime of dedication and commitment in service to our country and your willingness to serve again. I was very impressed in our conversation this week with your humility and with your acuity of the global situation today. Several past Secretaries of [Defense] have actually said in recent years that the greatest threat to national security is our own federal debt. Do you agree with that, sir?”

General Mattis: “I do, sir…We don’t want a military that just breaks the bank, but at the same time, we cannot solve this debt problem on the backs of our military alone…I consider it an abrogation of our generation's responsibility to transfer a debt of this size to our children.”
